Email marketing in Mauritius: newsletters people actually open
Social media reach goes up and down with each algorithm change. Your email list belongs to you. For Mauritian businesses, a good newsletter is one of the cheapest ways to bring customers back.
Build your list the right way
Under the Mauritius Data Protection Act 2017, people should know what they are signing up for and be able to object to direct marketing at any time. The Data Protection Commissioner recommends opt-in as good practice. In practice:
- Use a clear sign-up form: “Receive our offers by email”.
- Collect only what you need: often just a name and an email.
- Include an unsubscribe link in every email and honour it quickly.
- Never buy email lists.
The official guidance is published by the Data Protection Office. This article is general information, not legal advice.
Where to collect emails
- Your website and contact form
- In store, at the counter or on receipts
- Facebook and Instagram lead forms
- Events, lives and giveaways, with clear consent
Write emails people open
- A short, specific subject line. “New arrivals this weekend” beats “Newsletter #12”.
- One main message per email, with one clear button.
- Mobile first. Most people read on their phone.
- A regular rhythm, for example twice a month, so people expect you.
- Segment where you can: new customers, loyal customers, B2B contacts.
Automate the basics
A welcome email for new subscribers, a birthday offer, or a reminder after a quote: simple automated sequences run on their own once set up.
