Boosting a post vs. running a real ad campaign: what is the difference?
Almost every business page on Facebook has pressed the blue Boost button at some point. It is quick and it does show your post to more people. But if you want leads or sales, a proper campaign built in Meta Ads Manager usually gets far more from the same budget.
What boosting does
Boosting takes a post that already exists and pays to show it to more people. You choose a rough audience, a budget and a duration. It is fine for quick visibility, such as an event announcement.
What a real campaign adds
- The right objective. Ads Manager lets you optimise for leads, messages, website visits or conversions, not just engagement. Facebook then shows your ad to people most likely to take that action.
- Better targeting. You can build audiences from your customer lists, website visitors or people who interacted with your page, and exclude existing customers.
- Testing. Run several visuals and texts at once and let the results decide.
- Lead forms. Collect names and phone numbers without people leaving Facebook or Instagram.
- Placements. Show the right format on Facebook, Instagram, Stories, Reels and Messenger.
When boosting is enough
Use a boost when the goal is simple visibility for a single post and the budget is small. For anything tied to sales or leads, set up a campaign.
Common mistakes we see
- Optimising for likes when the goal is enquiries.
- Targeting all of Mauritius with no filters.
- Changing the campaign every day before it has time to learn.
- Not replying to the messages the ads generate.
- No monthly review of cost per lead.
Meta publishes guidance on campaign objectives in its Business Help Centre. If you would rather have it handled, our boosting and paid ads service runs and optimises campaigns every week. Ask us for a proposal.
